We Find Out How Sulphur, Louisiana Got Its Name (You can Guess)

On Saturday we did some exploring and stopped at the Brimstone Museum in Sulphur.
Sulphur is a mineral that used to be mined here.  Note the block of sulphur below the sign.

Mr. Frasch was born in 1851 and figured out a method of driving pipes down into sulphur deposits underground, then using hot water to dissolve it and bring it to the surface.  (Kind of like Fracking today) He put the town on the map and his business once employed 5000 people here.

Joanne was a sharp 84-year old widow who was running the small museum, and she gave us a personal tour.  She took off her glasses to pose for us.  She was fun to talk to.

The old tools of direct underground sulphur mining  were on display.  It was dangerous work and many men died from poisonous fumes and explosions.

Karen liked this tour guide and gave him a pat on the back for all his helpful information.
