This old canon on top of the fort could shoot a 15 inch diameter, 30-pound cannon ball three miles out into the gulf.
Between 1894 and 1943 several massive concrete gun batteries were built on the island that could shoot on enemy ships 17 miles out. They were never used in battle.
Many are still there and are fair game to inspect close up by visitors.
This old watch tower is one of the few structures that is fenced off to keep people out. (Good thing.)
As you can see here - some young people took advantage of the freedom to explore. (Nothing dangerous about their perch!)
If you ever get around Pensacola, this place is a must to visit if you like hands-on history.
