Halifax, Nova Scotia with Friends from back Home

Saturday gave us more brilliant weather as we landed in Halifax.
The first sight we noticed as we entered the harbor was this small lighthouse.

Halifax has a very interesting history so we got on a hop-on-hop off bus.
This old graveyard above is showing some of the recent damage from Hurricane Dorian.

This huge crane was knocked down by the storm and is still hanging from atop the building it was helping to erect.
For some reason the street was blocked off from traffic. Duh?

We found out that Halifax is the headquarters of Canada's Navy and holds their largest naval base.
In this shipyard new ships are being built that will cost Canada five billion dollars for NATO.

These three smokestacks are called the "Three Sisters" or "Three Widows" really.  They are located where the ship exploded in the famous "Halifax Explosion" of 1917.  A ship full of explosives and fuel collided with another ship during WWI in the harbor.  The blast that occurred was the largest in human history until the atomic bombs in WWII.   It demolished all buildings for about a 1-1/2 mile radius and 2000  people were killed by the blast, debris, fires, or collapsed buildings.  An estimated 9000 others were injured.

We visited the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.  Another sad part of the history of Halifax is that this is the city where most of the victims of the Titanic were brought and buried in 1912.
At the museum we rendezvoused with..

Ron and Char Hatlen, our previous neighbors and old friends from Ann Arbor.  They are on a trip throughout Nova Scotia with a rented car.  Char is investigating some of her  Canadian family history.
We had lunch with them and watched part of the Michigan - Wisconsin football game on TV. ---> SAD!!

We also got to visit this important resident of Haifax above. Ha

We decided we like traveling on the Zuiderdam  much better.

As we sailed out of the Halifax port in the afternoon we were accompanied by this pilot boat alongside.  We thought it might have something to do with the naval base here.
We had a couple of delightful days in Nova Scotia.
How long can this beautiful weather last.???
Maybe we are just lucky!
