Copper Mining put Ajo on the map, so we just had to drive up to the lookout to see what was left of the open pit copper mine.
There was water at the bottom of the pit. The lookout had a small visitor center that was being manned by an old resident and his wife. He told us the depth of the pit was about the same as the height of the hill behind. His father had been a millwright at the mine.
Here Karen poses with one of the old 30-ton ore cars from the mine that was on display at the local town museum.
We loved Olsens market place in Ajo. It was a combination IGA grocery store/ Ace hardware store that also sold beer, wine, liquor, ice cream cones, rented movie DVDs, and had a deli with tables where you could sit down and eat! Talk about one-stop shopping.
At Shadow Ridge RV Park we saw this collection of liquor bottles on a porch and thought the owner might have a drinking issue....????
