We Leave Memphis and Head South

The "City of New Orleans" is an Amtrak train that leaves Chicago every evening and makes a 19-hour trip to New Orleans.  Its overnight schedule has 17 stops along the way.  We got up early Thursday morning, jumped in a taxi and boarded the train at 6:45 a.m. in Memphis.  We left our truck behind in the underground parking garage of the hotel.  We arrived in New Orleans at 3:45 p.m. and took another taxi to the Intercontinental Hotel on St. Charles Street downtown.  We spent the rest of the day exploring the neighborhood and having dinner.

Friday morning we boarded a hop-on-hop-off tour bus.  As we passed this tree , you see above, we were reminded that Mardi Gras had recently ended.  Those are beads and trinkets hanging from the branches.

We hopped off the bus at the huge National WWII Museum.

The museum was busy with excellent displays, movies, and artifacts.

This display shows the relative number of troops in the war between Japan, the U.S.A., and Germany.

Here is a typical U.S. household living room during the war.

The museum gives you an outstanding historical/ educational experience.
We spent  over four hours here, but only saw a fraction of was was available to see and read.
It was terrific.

On our bus ride back to the hotel we were held up for about a half-hour on this street where a bicycle rider had been hit by a vehicle.  Welcome to the big city, huh?

Tomorrow, Saturday,  we plan to see more of the Crescent City.
